Often when I start a watercolor painting I try to work on a color. Yellow has always been a challenging color for me to paint with. I learned all yellows are not created equally. That helped a lot.
These are the yellows I have in my palette:
Lemon Yellow- a cool green yellow.
Hanza Yellow Light - a cool green yellow.
Arylide yellow - a cool green yellow
Transparent Yellow- mid temp and more orange yellow.
New Gamboge- a warm, orange yellow.
Arylide yellow deep- a warm, orange yellow.
If you don't know which way the yellow you are using leans ( green or orange), you can mix it with a green blue - cerulean. If the green is bright and clear then you have a yellow that leans green. If the green you get is a little dull or gray green, then you have a yellow that leans orange. It's helpful to know this. It will help alot when you are mixing colors.
Here are some watercolor paintings I created to practice and learn my yellows. In the process I also learned how to use their compliments for shadows ect., I hope this inspires you to create some paintings with yellow. It's such a cheery, warm color. Thanks for reading,
